Ask the folks at Wilson Binkley Advertising and Marketing about the importance of brand-creation and success in advertising, and they’ll be steadfast in their reply: “It’s about setting yourself apart from the competition.”
As the largest full-service advertising agency in southern New Mexico, Wilson Binkley has done just that. The company is a total solution for small, medium and large businesses seeking professional help with advertising and media buying for television, radio, print, Internet and outdoor. Plus, the agency provides market research, direct mail, printing and public relations services.
“We understand the value of advertising and how to create campaigns for all different types of industries and trades,” said company partner Ken Binkley. Wilson Binkley is always tracking the latest media trends and social media interfaces, staying current for their clients. “There are two level of clients we serve – those that can take advantage of our full-service advertising and those who are seeking individual services such as creating brochures, podcasts, logo packages and other marketing material.”
Wilson Binkley was established by managing partner David Wilson, who has more than 24 years of combined advertising agency experience. Wilson used his marketing and advertising skills to establish the Las Cruces firm in 1989. In 1992, after workingfor the agency as an intern, Binkley joined the firm and became a partner in 1998. Later, in 2005, Rob Sharp also became a partner in the business after joining the agency in 1995. All three partners earned bachelor’s degrees in advertising from New Mexico State University.
“One of the greatest rewards of working in this business is watching our clients succeed,” Binkley said. “At one time, we worked with a small business – our smallest account at that time – which became our second largest account within four years. That was very satisfying for us.”
One of the most challenging aspects of the advertising business is getting clients to understand the value of brand-creation and public awareness that only an advertising campaign can forge.
“A challenge I encounter very commonly is that people don’t understand the difference between advertising, marketing and public relations – they use those terms synonymously, but they are very different types of services,” Binkley said. “It’s interesting to see the perceptions and expectations that people have when it comes to advertising.”
To eliminate confusion, the dedicated team of 13 employees, including two college- level interns, work intimately with clients to figure out their target advertising or marketing approach.
“When talking to a new client, we ask them, what are you really looking for?” Binkley said. “Once we understand that, our next challenge is to educate them about the services they are seeking. Advertising is a very important investment to any business.” Wilson Binkley works with clients in virtually every industry, including financial institutions, real estate development, nonprofit organizations, car dealerships and “pretty much any other business,” Binkleysaid. Notable Wilson Binkley clients include Spaceport America, the Borman Autoplex and FirstLight Federal Credit Union.
“We handle several accounts outside of the area too, including in El Paso and even a big client in North Carolina,” Binkley said.
And as the recent economic downturn has shrunk the operating expenses of virtually every industry or trade, Wilson Binkley is evermore vigilant and considerate of staying within a responsible budget.
“Our clientele, for the most part, has been very stable. They haven’t grown aggressively but are maintaining their advertising budgets,” Binkley said. “The biggest thing we’ve noticed (in the last year) is the lack of new startup businesses.”
Binkley, however, remains optimisticabout the future of Las Cruces’ economy and the opportunity to grow the firm.
“The spaceport coming here will be big, and the convention center will hopefully bring business in tourism-related areas – both of those projects will have some interesting ramifications,” he said.
No matter the number of clients or state of the economy, Wilson Binkley will continue to bring a fresh approach to the advertising field with its attention-grabbing and creative advertising, solid research-driven planning and marketing campaigns.
“If you have no face, no identity, no brand, nothing separates you from anyone else,” Binkley said. “I’m always excited to work on projects in which clients are willing to do something unique, something different.”
Wilson Binkley is a total solution for small, medium and large businesses seeking professional help with advertising and media buying for television, radio, print, Internet and outdoor.
Partners David “lead spaceport rocketeer” Wilson, Ken “web & technology superhero” Binkley and robert “writer extraordinaire“ Sharp lead southern New Mexico’s largest full-service advertising agency in New Mexico, Wilson Binkley Advertising & Marketing. The firm has a strong history in New Mexico and has pioneered spaceflight and aeronautic advertising even before the creation of Spaceport America, one of the firm’s main accounts.
